The Austrian Artist Ferdinand Welz

His works include sculptures or fountains for the city of Vienna and in Sweden, as well as medals,
portrait medals and Austrian schilling coins.

On the occasion of the opening of the Historical Museum of Vienna, Professor Welz created a
commemorative medal from bronze, which shows the museum of Vienna on one side and on the
other side is a profile of President H. C. Körner.

Ferdinand Welz, sculptor and medalist, was born in Vienna on April 18,
1915.  From 1955 to 1985 Welz was director of the School of Medallic Art
at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.  From 1970-1972 he was Rector of
the Academy.  While Welz's work typically centers on cast medals, he
always allowed his students complete artistic freedom.  Some of his more

Early in his career he worked for the Austrian national mint in Vienna as an
engraver.
