Austrian Weltspartag Tokens
|
Weltspartag: October 31st, International Savings Day (Weltspartag), is a holiday recognized by many countries, however it is
usually not a day that is observed by a day off from work. In Austria on October 31st and maybe for a few days before and
after, (usually Oct 29-31) many banks offer in celebration of Weltspartag, and as a small bonus for opening an account or
making a deposit, promotional gifts for adults and children. These gifts often included a Weltspartag Token. Many banks
donate gifts to worthy organizations and sponsor contests in schools to observe Weltspartag and to encourage savings.
There are many interesting tokens that have been issued over the years in observance of Weltspartag but fewer banks are
issuing them than have in the past.
The decision to observe Weltspartag came from an International Banking Congress held in Milan Italy October 27, 1924 which
consisted of banking representatives from 29 countries. The decision to make Weltspartag official came about on October 30,
1924 and October 31 was declared as the official International Savings day. Weltspartag was observed in Austria for the first
time on October 31, 1925. It was thought that it would encourage savings, help decrease inflation and unemployment and was
a way to encourage the population to believe in the future and create reserves. In 1989 the UN adopted October 31st as
International Savings Day.
As you might expect, there are quite a few banks in Austria including a few private banks and many have issued
commemorative tokens, Weltspartag tokens as well as other banking holiday tokens.

Many of the tokens below were given to customers by the Länderbank of Graz. The Länderbank (Bank Austria) was one of
the major banks and conducted business in all nine Austrian Provinces. Bank Austria was restructured in 1998 which
resulted in the formation of the Bank Austria Group, consequently the Länderbank no longer exist as a separate entity.
The Länderbank was called the “Hypo Bank” (Hippo Bank) before it's name was changed to Länderbank.
