The Austrian Artist Ludwig Hujer
Ludwig Hujer (July 20, 1872-1968) was born in Wilhelmshöhe (North Bohemia).  He trained at
Industrial Schools in Gablonz (Bohemia), had a two year hands-on apprenticeship in Vienna and
trained at the Vienna College of Arts and Crafts under Prof. Kühne and Prof. Stefan Schwartz.  He
traveled and worked in Belgium, France and England from 1895-1898 and worked with the Wyons
in London before returning to Vienna.  He was a member of the Deutsch-Bohimischer
Kunstlerbund or Art Federation. He dedicated himself predominately to the creation of small
bronzes, medals, and plaques.

Hujer, a prolific Artist, created a multitude of highly artistic and technically outstanding works
during his life which brought him success and fame.  Many of his works are in public collections
including the Historical Museum of Vienna as well as in private collections.  For many years he was
chairman of the "Künstlerbundes Österreichischer Medailleure" (Federation of Austrian
Medalists).  At one time Hujer was a Professor at the College of Arts and Crafts (now University of
Applied Art) in Vienna.  At the ANS expo of contemporary medallic art in New York in 1910 he
exhibited thirty-one pieces.  He also experienced some success as an author of Art books.
Plaque by Hujer of Hans Ranzoni, (The Younger)
(9/6/1896-10/11/1991), Bronze, 48mm x 69mm, reverse is blank.
Hans Ranzoni, of Italian descent, was born in Vienna on Sept. 6,
1896.  He grew up in a prosperous family atmosphere that was
strongly influenced by Art.  His father, Hans Ranzoni the Elder, (1868-
1956) was one of Vienna’s most well known landscape painters and
President of the Vienna Fine Art's Society.

In 1915 Hans was drafted into the army and after World War I
attended the Technical University in Vienna.  The lack of artistic
expression and freedom to be found in a technical career didn't suit
him and with the support of his mother (his father initially opposed the
idea) in 1923 he started studies at the Vienna Art College.

In 1925 at the Graphische Lehr und Versuchsanstalt, he began
classes in copper engraving under Alfred Cossmann.  Cossmann was
Austria's most highly regarded engraver of the time and Ranzoni both
studied and worked with him for the following three years.
In 1940 he married Edith Riedel, a successful commercial artist in her own right.  Soon afterward
Allied bombing destroyed his apartment along with all his artistic belongings.  In 1945 he was
appointed Chairman of the engraving class at the Graphiache Lehr und Versuchsanstalt, as the
successor to Alfred Cossmann.  He worked there as an instructor until 1961.
As a practicing artist, Hans Ranzoni always preferred the hard line technique of engraving over
etching methods. His abilities of capturing the smallest of details within this demanding medium
gained for him an international reputation and he received many prizes for his work, which also
included illustrations, bookplates, official documents and stamps.

Today the Cabinet des Estampes in Vienna includes a collection of Ranzoni's engravings and
drawings in its permanent collection.
