| Austrian Bi-Metallic 50 Schilling Coins |
| Composition: The outer ring is CU-AL-NI and the center is Magnimat 7 which is a trade name. Magnimat 7 is a special alloy invented by a German Company ThyssenKrupp VDM . The name means magnetic material ie mag from magnetic and mat for material. The "7" means 7 percent nickel in the center of the alloy. The alloy is 75% Cu 25% Ni. Magnimat 7 is like a sandwich. The cupro-nickel alloy covers a pure nickel kernel of 7%. This kernel is magnetic and allows a magnetic test in vending machines for example. The above information is a partial quote from Franz Artmüller, head of the Austrian Mint Marketing in Vienna. I added to it and took away very small parts to make it slightly more readable in English Minted from 1996-2001, they come in three finishes, normal uncirculated with no packaging and could be acquired at the bank (these circulated a little), special uncirculated in a blister pack (also called brilliant uncirculated) and proof in a blister pack. The same reverse is used for all 9 coins and they are 27mm in diameter. |
