Rudolf of Hapsburg, 1218-91, German king (1273-91), was
the first king of the Hapsburg dynasty. Rudolf's election
was contested by the powerful King Ottocar II of Bohemia.
Rudolf eventually defeated Ottocar at Marchfeld (1278)
and invested (1282) his own sons Albert (later King Albert
I) and Rudolf with Austria, Styria, and Carniola, which he
had won from Ottocar; these lands became the core of the
Hapsburg possessions.
Located in the province of Carinthia, on the Drava, Villach is an industrial
and rail center. It manufactures wood products, cellulose, machinery, and
chemicals. Nearby is a mineral spa. Originally Roman, Villach belonged to
the bishopric of Bamberg from the early 11th century to 1759, when it
passed to Austria.
Constructed from 1973 to1978 Austria's longest tunnel (13.9 km) opened in 1978.
(Austria-Switzerland).
The Vienna International Center is located in Vienna's 22nd district and was built during
1973-1979. Construction plans were by J. Staber (won 4th prize in the 1970 international
competition). The ground plan was inspired by the shape of the letter Y. With the completion of
the VIC, Vienna became the 3rd UN headquarters alongside New York and Geneva. A
conference centre (Austria Center Vienna, also built by Staber) was added in 1983-1987.
